    Re: old man

I tried cropping and flipping the image and did not really come up with anything much better. I do like the stark hard contrasts in the image (both the tone and subjects.)

I would consider this a documentary image. A moment in time. 'It was there and I captured it.' This is OK, but the story is unclear.  The title 'old man' is not so clear to me. Other titles come to mind, and we have members older than that guy <grin.>  If you wanted an old man image it should be more about him, with him clearly as the subject.

There is that distracting leg from the other person behind one of the post and the brightness of the left side of the image is disturbing. The sky sucks and the upper part of the image may be cropped off.  Burn in the bright side, make the old man more of the subject, crop. Correct the vertical aligment too...

     But what do I know...

The "old man" looks a lot like Peter Schulze don't you think?? Cool

    Re: old man

I agree....I hate the title I picked.....I sat here for a few minutes, and I couldnt come up with anything I liked...

its funny, but I didnt notice alot of the flaws until I posted it. I had already noticed the leg thing, which is a little disappointing, but the one thing I didnt notice until imediately after I posted it was the crappy sky, and some funny spots near one of the pillars on the right, and a funny line on the left upper side of the photo. I had already played around with some cropping, but this was the best that I found...but it still definately needs some improvements.

I took the shot in Havana from inside a moving bus....so for a rookie like me, im impressed its as good as it is....

thanks for the suggestions John, I am going to play with it a little more.

That's what happens to me. I work on an image, think I'm done and then post it. After a break from working on the image, I then notice more improvements.

This picture obviously has a lot of flaws as John has pointed out. And there are no easy fixes so I wouldn't bother getting too concerned over it. There is, however, something about this picture that has a certain appeal. I think the background, with all it's flaws, is essential to this picture as it puts the "old man" into context. If either you, as the photographer, or the old man as the subject, were somehow famous people, then this would probably be considered a great piece of art.

By the way, guys, I blew this up and I don't think the old guy looks like Peter Schulze at all. But there is a certain resemblance to Ted Jez.

Rats!  I knew you guys would get me somehow.  That is why I tried early to deflect the thinking about "old" to someone else.

Yes Peter, it does; sort of parched, faded, dried up, bleak and definately old. Regards Peter

Well seeing as I had a hard time keeping up with you Peter S. on the weekend, I think that age is no barrier...

It was a really great time at the cottage. We will have to do it again....(Joan says you can win your pennies back next time.)

    Re: old man

A nice overall look. I assume a grab shot?  Returning to the spot when the light is diffuse and waiitng for another subject to walk between the pillars with an aperture sufficent to render the FG pillars and the BG sharp would improve it and ....... eliminate the 3rd leg. As a print it would look better with the over head wire removed.
