Terrific day shooting dragon flies - especially with good company.

Peter Schulze and John Green and I were out trying our hand today - lots of things to shoot.

Here is a different coloured one that I saw - only saw it once and only got two shots at it.

Shot with the Nikon D70 and the Sigma 180mm lens with a 1.4x sigma extender - no VR with this lens.

    Manual focus - 250mm lens - ISO 400 - f 11 - 1/250 second - hand held.

We were really able to get close to a lot of these - if you were careful!

Same setup with the D70 and the Sigma + 2x extender

Nice shots John and Ted. Nice variation of colours Ted. Mine is another red one. Peter

Tried this combination for just a short while - very heavy and hard to use hand held.

    Nikon D300 - 70 - 200 f2.8 lens with 2x Nikon teleconvertor - lens has VR

    Lens at 400mm - ISO 400 - f11 @ 1/250 sec

I was not happy with any of the images I got with this combination.

Good shooting everyone - looks like we all got a bunch of "winners"

Red Dragon Fly - too bad it was sitting on such a "hot" leaf.

    D70 and Sigma lens combination.

Little Blue one - never really got a sharp image of any of these - had to over sharpen this one.

They are very tiny and very skittish.

    D70 and Sigma lens combination.

Dragon Fly close up - we had a discussion as to whether everything in an image had to be tack sharp - what do you think?

    D70 and Sigma lens setup.

Hi Ted, I think that the body and feet in your shot are the important elements in the image. The wings in this case are not that important an look OK out of focus to some extent. Regards Peter

Hi Ted, I would tone down the hot leaf in Photoshop. Peter

More of an environmental shot instead of the close up - I think I like this better - still learning!

Here is one by the beach. The 4 wing kind. This one as well as the other one were shot with a D-200, 180 mm 2.8 lens, tripod . Regards Peter

Another image where all the wings are not sharp. I think it's fine for the subject.
